RSI prevention |
RSI (Repetitive Strain Injury) is a nasty illness you can get when you work to long and/or in a wrong position. Prevent repetitive strain injury, adjust your chair to your length and measures, take a break regularly and make use of the VDU Tachograph installed on the student desktop! Don't forget to make the special test to check your typing skills.

Don't save files on the harddisk |
At the end of every session the student desktop will reboot and as a result the system will be completely clean. All files you saved on the C partition of the harddisk will be deleted by then and are lost. So don't do this!
Every day the D partition of the harddisk of all the student desktops will be swept completely clean. So likewise we strongly advise you not to save your files here!
All files saved on the D partition of the harddisk are accessable by students using the student desktop. Before you end your session we advise you
to delete all files of any importance!

Your M drive |
Save your files on floppydisk, USB memory stick or even better save them in your home directory on the student server. This is your M drive. Here you have 250 MB diskspace. Out of campus you can access your M drive using the File Transfer Protocol. For information on the installation and configuaration of the SmartFTP client you can download a manual.

UvT user name password combination |
You log in at the student desktop using the UvT-username and the UvT-password you received from the Student Information Desk during your registration as a student of Tilburg University.
Your UvT-password is stricktly private. For security reasons you are advised to change your UvT-password regularely. You can change the password on line via the ICT Servicepoint at www.tilburguniversity.nl/its/servicepoint/.
In case you forgot your UvT-password you need to turn to Information desk of the library to set it.
Notice that you need to identify yourself with a valid identity card.

If you want to take a break |
When you need to take a break you can lock the student desktop. But only for a period of 15 minutes at the most. If this period expires,
the student desktop automaticaly will reboot and becomes available for other students. All unsaved files will be lost. Don't let this happen to you. Be prepared and as a precaution allways
save your files before you lock!
To lock the student desktop use the key combination <Ctrl> + <Alt> + <Del> and click 'Lock PC' in the window that will appear. To unlock
type your UvT-username and -password.

Programs |
A large variety of programs is installed on the student desktop. Ready to use and meeting the needs of the students at Tilburg University.

Printing |
Via the student desktop you can send print jobs to one of the thirteen Océ printer/copiers for students, located on the university campus. Eight of them you will find in the library, the rest you will find in the coffee room of the Cobbenhagen building, the foyer of the Prisma building P, the Dante Cybercafé and the Montesquieu Learning Centre.
When you want to print a document you need to select a specific printer via the list in the printer dialogue window first. This window appears via the option Print in the File menu. After you have given the print command, your print job will be sent to the selected printer and stored in your print mailbox. The name of your print mailbox is the same as your UvT-username (S + ANR).
The printer driver of the student desktop has the following defauls:
- Orientation = Portrait
- Page Order = Front to Back
- Page Per Sheet = 1
- Paper Source = Automatically Select
- To Mailbox
- 2-sided
- Staple = As in Document
- Paper Size = A4
Eventually you can change these defaults via the tabs in the printer dialogue window.

Mailbox |
Every student at Tilburg University has a mailbox with 100 MB diskspace. To access this mailbox on campus you can choose between the mailclients Outlook 2003 and Webmail, which is a browser application you start using the URL: www.uvt.nl/mail/student. In your mailbox you will find your new mail and you have the possibility
to create folders where you can archive the mail you read. Off campus you can access your mailbox and all the mail stored in folders using the internet and
an IMAP complient mail client (like Outlook 2000/2003, Outlook Express or Webmail).

Personal homepage |
You have received a personal homepage. However since this is an initial homepage equal for all students it needs some adjustments.
To accomplish this you must edit the file named index.htm you will find in your home directory M:\ in the folder
public_html. You can view your homepage using the URL: www.uvt.nl/personal-homepage/student/~username.
In case you lost this file you can download a new initial one, by right clicking the following URL
http://drcwww.uvt.nl/diensten/its/voorlichting/d-loads/stud-homepage-eng.html
Bear in mind to save this file under the name index.htm / index.html in the folder public_html in your home directory M:\.

Sound |
Every student desktop has a sound card. To prevent sound pollution speaker sets are not installed.
However you can plug in a headset at the front of the PC. Because of hygiene and the risk of theft no head sets are connected. You have to supply with your own.

How to logout |
When you are finished using the student desktop you need to logout and end your session by
way of the option 'Reset PC' in the Windows start menu. The connection to your M-drive and mailbox will be closed and the student desktop will reboot, ready to be used by an other student.
If you neglect to do this and just leave the desktop up and running you take a number of big risks. Every arbitrary passer-by is then capable to: access your mailbox, access your M-drive, access your print account, access to all other password protected (web) applications, where you agreed for Windows to save your password local.

The help menu will appear.
